What We Believe

Salvation cannot be earned, rather it is a gift that can be accepted through faith in Jesus. In response to grace, we turn from sin and are obedient to Christ in baptism.

Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Not of works, lest any man should boast.

We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God, without error in the original writings, and is the final authority for all Christians.

2 Timothy 3:14-17
14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

1 Thessalonians 2:13
For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

2 Peter 1:20-21
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Matthew 5:17-19
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus did for us what we could never do for ourselves. On the cross, Jesus became our substitute, bearing our sin and becoming the only sufficient payment for our sins . Through Christ, God brings forgiveness and new life to the world.

2 Corinthians 5:21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one. As they share in deep community with each other, we value the selfless relationships modeled in the Trinity. We enjoy the “grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.”

Matthew 3:16-17
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

We are a body of believers called to share God’s love with the world. We are the visible expression of the Kingdom of God on this earth.

1 Corinthians 12:12-13
12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

our

History

1868
Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church began in 1868 when members of nearby Round Island Baptist Church started an outreach ministry to serve the Mt. Pisgah community. In those early years, the church met in homes and small buildings as the congregation began to grow.
1940s
By the 1940s, the church expanded with the construction of a two-story building and the addition of a bus ministry to bring people from across the Athens area to church.
1960s
In the 1960s, a brick auditorium and Sunday School wing were built to accommodate continued growth. Later, in the 1980s under the leadership of Bro. Richard Bowling, a gymnasium and prophet’s chamber were added.
1995
In 1995, Dr. Juaken Dumas became pastor, and the church has continued to grow and serve the community. In the late 1990s, Mt. Pisgah Baptist Academy was established, and in 2012 the Spanish ministry expanded into a full church ministry with multiple weekly services.
1998
In the late 1990s, Mt. Pisgah Baptist Academy (later called Limestone Christian Academy) was established.
2012
In 2012 the Spanish ministry expanded into a full church ministry with multiple weekly services.
2022
In 2022, Johnathan Dumas became co-pastor alongside Dr. Juaken Dumas.
Present Day
Today Mt. Pisgah continues to minister through our music ministry, Christian education, Sunday School, a bus ministry, King's Kids, Tweens, and Teens for children, Spanish ministry, and many other opportunities to serve. We look forward with gratitude for what God has done and anticipation for what He will continue to do.
